This was the 2nd Annual RE BarCamp YYC and the feedback to organizers during the event was extremely positive. The informal sessions allowed for high-energy, but casual discussion and the vast majority of participants stayed for all four sessions and the reception afterwards.

Once again, #yycrebar trended on Twitter in the Calgary area thanks to the tweeting of participants and organizers.

Here are a few things you should know about the day:

Dress casual. This is a casual conference; suits and ties not required.

Bring Your Gadgets. This is a tech-driven day. Bring your phones and tablets and tweet up a storm when you’re there. Remember to tag everything #yycrebar.

Park at the Wainwright Hotel. Heritage Park isn’t open for the year yet, so you don’t have to park in the main public lots. Drive up Heritage Drive or turn west onto Heritage Drive from 14 Street SW.  Follow the new road around to the right and keep following it until you are at security, which is under the clock tower.  Stop at the large stop sign where it says “Please stop and check in at Security.” Once you’ve been let in by security, take the road straight up the hill and drive in past the red brick building on your right.  Continue on the road across the train tracks and to the right, you will see a wooden boardwalk on your left.  Follow this road down into the town.  The Hotel is the large building on your left.  You may park perpendicular to the boardwalks surrounding the Hotel.

Take Part. This event is participant driven. You talk about what you want to talk about in groups as big or as small as you’d like. There will be whiteboards on the main floor of the hotel where participants will fill in topics they want to discuss. Be sure to get to it early; the board fills up quickly!

Noon-1 p.m.: Lunch
1-1:50 p.m.: Session 3

Networking reception: 2:30-4:30 p.m.

Also:

• Lunch will be hot
• Reception snacks and drinks will be available beginning at 2:30 p.m.

4. All the cool kids are doing it

Last year’s early registrants were some of the most recognizable names in the industry. If it’s something the top people are doing, shouldn’t you do it, too?

3. You won’t get a t-shirt if you wait

Let’s be honest here, everyone loves a free t-shirt.  The first 100 people to register before April 15, 2013 will receive a free RE Bar Camp YYC t-shirt. Just think, you can wear this trendy t-shirt ironically or sincerely, and you are almost always going to be considered the most fashionable person in the room.       

2. You’ll get first-dibs on facilitating or suggesting topics for sessions

The best part about any BarCamp is that no one can ever complain that they didn’t get to hear or talk about the topics that mattered to them. At a BarCamp, of course, you can spark a conversation about anything your heart desires. By registering early, you have the opportunity to let RE BarCamp YYC know that you would like lead a discussion or the types of discussions you’d like to hear other people lead.

1. You’ll avoid having to listen to your colleague’s taunts about how they are going and you’re not

As much as we’d like to include everyone, capacity for RE BarCamp is 140 registrants. That means the longer you wait to register, the less chance you have to get a spot. It’s simple mathematics really. Obviously, not getting a spot would mean you’d have to endure that painstaking talk afterwards from your colleagues telling you that RE BarCamp YYC was awesome and how you should have been there. Nobody likes a bragger right? It can all be avoided though by registering now.

Register for YYC RE Bar Camp 2013

Registration is now open for RE BarCamp YYC, which is set for May 1 at the Wainwright Hotel at Heritage Park. This unconventional day of exciting, unplanned discussions will keep you on your toes, while providing each attendee with an individualized experience.

The idea behind a bar camp is that the day’s sessions are built throughout the day by volunteer session facilitators, allowing for spur-of-the-moment conversations. It’s a chance for attendees to turn the conference into what they want it to be.

Just type “bar camp” into any search engine and you’ll get a picture of what this event is intended for and what it can be.

The Real Estate Council of Alberta (RECA), the Alberta Real Estate Association (AREA), the Alberta Mortgage Brokers Association (AMBA) and the Calgary Real Estate Board (CREB®) are taking what we learned from last year’s event and making this year’s even better. This event depends on the participants that join us and their enthusiasm.
