Important Info for Participants of RE BarCamp YYC

Thank you for registering for RE BarCamp YYC 2013!

Here are a few things you should know about the day:

Dress casual. This is a casual conference; suits and ties not required.

Bring Your Gadgets. This is a tech-driven day. Bring your phones and tablets and tweet up a storm when you’re there. Remember to tag everything #yycrebar.

Park at the Wainwright Hotel. Heritage Park isn’t open for the year yet, so you don’t have to park in the main public lots. Drive up Heritage Drive or turn west onto Heritage Drive from 14 Street SW.  Follow the new road around to the right and keep following it until you are at security, which is under the clock tower.  Stop at the large stop sign where it says “Please stop and check in at Security.” Once you’ve been let in by security, take the road straight up the hill and drive in past the red brick building on your right.  Continue on the road across the train tracks and to the right, you will see a wooden boardwalk on your left.  Follow this road down into the town.  The Hotel is the large building on your left.  You may park perpendicular to the boardwalks surrounding the Hotel.

Wainwright Hotel Parking

Take Part. This event is participant driven. You talk about what you want to talk about in groups as big or as small as you’d like. There will be whiteboards on the main floor of the hotel where participants will fill in topics they want to discuss. Be sure to get to it early; the board fills up quickly!

Top 4 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Wait Until the Last Minute for Registration

TooLateEveryone knows that RE Bar Camps are on the cutting edge of the conference scene these days. So much like the teenager who expresses their innate individuality by making slight changes to everything and anything that is the norm, RE BarCamp YYC has decided to follow suit. Here is a not so different, yet hip, top-four list of why you shouldn’t wait until the very last minute to sign up for RE Bar Camp YYC on May 1, 2013. Top-five lists are so last year.

4. All the cool kids are doing it

Last year’s early registrants were some of the most recognizable names in the industry. If it’s something the top people are doing, shouldn’t you do it, too?

3. You won’t get a t-shirt if you wait

Let’s be honest here, everyone loves a free t-shirt.  The first 100 people to register before April 15, 2013 will receive a free RE Bar Camp YYC t-shirt. Just think, you can wear this trendy t-shirt ironically or sincerely, and you are almost always going to be considered the most fashionable person in the room.

2. You’ll get first-dibs on facilitating or suggesting topics for sessions

The best part about any BarCamp is that no one can ever complain that they didn’t get to hear or talk about the topics that mattered to them. At a BarCamp, of course, you can spark a conversation about anything your heart desires. By registering early, you have the opportunity to let RE BarCamp YYC know that you would like lead a discussion or the types of discussions you’d like to hear other people lead.

1. You’ll avoid having to listen to your colleague’s taunts about how they are going and you’re not

As much as we’d like to include everyone, capacity for RE BarCamp is 140 registrants. That means the longer you wait to register, the less chance you have to get a spot. It’s simple mathematics really. Obviously, not getting a spot would mean you’d have to endure that painstaking talk afterwards from your colleagues telling you that RE BarCamp YYC was awesome and how you should have been there. Nobody likes a bragger right? It can all be avoided though by registering now.

Organized Chaos at Work – RE BarCamp YYC Wrap Up

More than 100 Alberta real estate and mortgage brokerage professionals attended RE  BarCamp YYC at the Calgary Real Estate Board (creb®) yesterday. Attendees participated in more than 20 separate participant-driven sessions on topics as diverse as using an iPad to the Future of Organized Real Estate.

2012-05-02 11 48 29 Sessions were very informal. Here Gary Chambers facilitated a discussion on the future of realtor.ca

RE BarCamp YYC was the first BarCamp held in Calgary, and thanks to the interest shown by the industry, Alberta industry professionals can expect to see more BarCamps in the future.

For those who missed it, here’s a rundown of the day:

We Came

We Learned

We Had Fun

Participants tweeted furiously before, during and after the event, and #yycrebar trended on Twitter in the Calgary area.

2012-05-02 08 53 59 The board began to fill up early, nearly to capacity by the start of the first session.

Thanks to everyone who came and everyone who facilitated a session, Ernest Barbaric who provided the keynote presentation, and a special thanks to the sponsors: National Bank, Kahane Law Office, RE/MAX, CIR Realty, the Alberta Real Estate Association, creb® and the Real Estate Council of Alberta,  who made it all possible.

Top 9 Reasons to Attend a BarCamp

Reason #9: It’s local.

You don’t have to travel very far and everyone you meet will be dealing with the same issues you face.

Reason #8: No “Boat Show.”

I’m sure many of you have attended larger conferences and tradeshows and felt that all you took away was that big bag of swag and the feeling of mild disappointment that you didn’t win the big draw at the end. Traditional conferences and tradeshows are certainly an opportunity to network and educate yourself, but sometimes, they don’t work out the way they’re supposed to. Sometimes they’re just an excuse to get a lot of people in one place so vendors can sell you stuff. There is ABSOLUTELY NO SELLING at BarCamps. You are there to learn, to teach, to discuss and to network.

Reason #7: There’s food

Breakfast, lunch, afternoon drinks. What more do you need?

Reason #6: Interesting, creative, hardworking people – like you

BarCamp sounds intriguing to you? You probably have a lot in common with the other attendees.

Reason #5: Barcamps are edgy

You think you’re ahead of the curve? The fact that you are reading this blog proves it. BarCamps started in the technology and computer industries, where discussions weren’t about how to best use a smart phone, but were about building the best smart phone. Those in the industry that are on the cutting edge will be there.

Reason #4: Connect in person with people you know online

You know @peergroup pretty good. You tweet back and forth all day. Well, it’s time to put a face and a voice to that Twitter handle.

Reason #3: Conference participants determine the schedule

Every breakout session at a BarCamp is created by a participant. No podiums here. No rushed speeches and time for 5 minutes of Q & A. Want to talk viral marketing all day? Go for it!

Reason #2: The Rule of Two Feet

You may feel like discussing your favourite topics all day, but if a session suddenly switches direction and you’d like to see what else is going on, just get up and do it. Informal sessions means informal rules.

Reason #1: Relaxed, informal learning at its best

Studies have shown that people tend to learn best when they are immersed in a discussion, not when they are being talked at.

Register today. All the cool kids are doing it.
